The Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa has apologised after she was accused of racism over a photo that appeared to show her pulling her eyes back with chopsticks while in China<\/a> for a series of tournaments.<\/p>\n Following her defeat on Saturday in the semi-finals of the China Open, Badosa\u2019s coach, Pol Toledo, posted the photo on his Instagram, tagging the official China Open account. Comments soon began pouring in, accusing Badosa of racism<\/a>.<\/p>\n The 26-year-old former world No 2 swiftly responded, urging people not to interpret the photo in that way. \u201cWe weren\u2019t even imitating Asian people,\u201d she wrote in response. \u201cI was playing around with my face and wrinkles.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI love Asia \u2026 and have plenty of Asian friends. They are the kindest.\u201d Toledo later deleted the photo from his Instagram account.<\/p>\n Before Tuesday\u2019s appearance at the Wuhan Open, Badosa apologised<\/a>. \u201cReally sorry, I didn\u2019t know this was offensive (or) towards racism,\u201d she wrote on social media. \u201cMy mistake. I take full responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n She added that she hoped people would understand and said she would learn from her mistake.<\/p>\n
