The two other locations \u2013 including areas mapped as potential orchid habitat \u2013 remained part of the fuel management program, scheduled for autumn 2025.<\/p>\n

Curtin University\u2019s Prof Kingsley Dixon, who has studied native orchids for about 45 years, said beard orchids were particularly sensitive to disturbance and could vanish quickly.<\/p>\n

A precautionary approach and careful science should be applied when dealing with critically endangered orchids, including in relation to planned burns, he said.<\/p>\n

Dixon said orchids were the \u201cmost treasured and most charismatic\u201d plant family in Australia with the \u201chighest number of threatened species\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcessive clearing, fragmentation, weeds, pests, disease, fire, put them all together and we\u2019ve essentially corralled orchids into ever smaller areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
